Cyberpunk 2077 is absolutely worth playing on PC in 2026. Night City delivers a rare combination of memorable characters, flexible first-person combat and an open world with a strong sense of place. Years of major updates have also reshaped the systems that once held the experience back.

The launch story still matters, but it no longer describes the game you can play today. Redesigned perks, improved police behaviour, vehicle combat and later quality-of-life features make the base game more coherent. Phantom Liberty adds one of its strongest storylines, although you can enjoy a complete adventure without buying the expansion.

The experience in practice

Play Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a story-driven RPG that lets you solve missions with guns, blades, stealth or hacking. The main campaign mixes personal stakes with large corporate conflicts, while side quests give Night City much of its emotional weight.

The game is strongest when you slow down, listen to the characters and build V around a clear playstyle. It is weaker when the map, loot and interface compete for your attention. Players who want a completely open simulation may also find that many missions remain carefully authored rather than fully systemic.

Night City is still the star

Night City looks spectacular, but its appeal goes beyond neon streets. Each district has its own architecture, social tension and rhythm. Corporate plazas, dense markets, industrial zones and the open Badlands make a drive across the map feel like a journey through different worlds.

The city also supports strong environmental storytelling. Apartments, clubs, clinics and abandoned buildings often reveal what happened before V arrived. You can miss some of the best details by moving directly from one objective marker to the next.

Not every crowd or building offers meaningful interaction. This is a cinematic RPG city rather than a life simulator. Accept that structure and Night City becomes easier to appreciate for what it does exceptionally well: atmosphere, visual identity and authored stories.

The characters make the story work

V's fight for survival gives the campaign urgency, but the relationships create its lasting impact. Johnny Silverhand can be hostile, funny and unexpectedly vulnerable. Judy, Panam, River, Kerry and the wider supporting cast each bring a different view of the city and the cost of living in it.

Several optional quest lines contain some of the game's most important character moments. Treat major side missions as part of the main experience instead of clearing only the yellow objectives. Your choices do not rewrite every part of Night City, but they can change relationships, mission outcomes and the endings available to V.

The writing works because it often leaves space for uncomfortable decisions. Cyberpunk 2077 rarely presents a clean heroic solution. It asks what V is willing to trade for survival, loyalty or a chance to become a legend.

Combat supports very different builds

Update 2.0 rebuilt the perk trees and cyberware systems, giving character progression a clearer purpose. A quickhacker can control a room through cameras and spreading hacks. A stealth build can move through guarded spaces without starting a firefight. Shotguns, precision rifles, blades and fast movement all support distinct approaches.

Choose one main combat idea during the early hours. Spreading attribute points across every branch delays the perks that make a build feel powerful. You can experiment with weapons, but a focused combination of attributes, cyberware and perks creates a much better rhythm.

Enemy AI is not perfect, especially in large or complicated spaces. The best encounters still give you several routes, useful devices and enough vertical space to improvise. Combat becomes much more expressive once movement abilities and stronger cyberware enter the build.

What the recent updates add

The current PC version includes the major gameplay overhaul from Update 2.0 and the later additions from Updates 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. These updates added features such as the NCART metro, repeatable races, expanded character and vehicle customization, AutoDrive, improved Photo Mode tools and more vehicle options.

Patch 2.31 improved AutoDrive behaviour and addressed additional Photo Mode and gameplay issues. These features do not transform the central story, but they make returning to Night City more pleasant and show how far the current build has moved beyond the original release.

PC players also have access to modern image scaling and frame generation options on compatible hardware. Update 2.3 added support for AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, Intel XeSS 2.0 and other display improvements. The useful choice is the one that gives you stable movement and a clean image, not simply the most demanding preset.

Do you need Phantom Liberty?

Phantom Liberty is worth adding if you already enjoy the base game's characters and mission design. The expansion takes V into Dogtown for a tense spy story involving Songbird, Solomon Reed and the NUSA. It adds major quests, gigs, gear and a Relic skill tree tied to the expansion.

You do not need it for the free gameplay improvements introduced with Update 2.0 or the later base-game updates. A new player can start with Cyberpunk 2077, learn the systems and decide whether another substantial storyline fits the experience they want.

The Ultimate Edition is the cleanest complete package when the price suits your budget. Phantom Liberty integrates naturally into a full playthrough, but it is still better to understand V and Night City before rushing toward Dogtown.

PC performance and requirements

Cyberpunk 2077 remains demanding, particularly when ray tracing is enabled. CD Projekt Red lists a 64-bit version of Windows 10, 12 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 6 GB, RX 580 8 GB or Intel Arc A380, and a 70 GB SSD as the minimum baseline for 1080p at low settings and 30 fps.

The official 1080p high target raises the recommendation to 16 GB of RAM with an RTX 2060 Super, RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770. Ray tracing and path tracing need much stronger hardware. Start without ray tracing, choose a stable frame-rate target and test a busy drive through the city before increasing effects.

An SSD is required and improves the experience beyond loading screens because Night City streams dense environments while you move. Update graphics drivers, remove outdated mods after a major patch and use the built-in benchmark as a repeatable comparison rather than judging performance from one quiet interior.

Who should play it?

Cyberpunk 2077 is a strong match if you want:

• A mature story with memorable companions
• Flexible combat built around weapons, cyberware and hacking
• A dense open world with exceptional atmosphere
• A long single-player campaign with meaningful side stories
• Advanced PC visuals with settings for different hardware levels

It may disappoint you if you want every building to be interactive, dislike first-person combat or prefer a short campaign with little dialogue. The amount of loot, calls and map activity can also feel busy until you learn what matters to your build.

The verdict

Cyberpunk 2077 has grown into one of the strongest open-world RPGs available on PC. Its greatest achievement is not a technical feature. It is the way Night City, V and the people around them stay memorable after the final mission.

The current version is easier to recommend because the combat, progression and everyday exploration now support that story more consistently. A few rough edges remain, and the most advanced visual settings can punish modest hardware. They no longer define the whole experience.
