Genshin Impact beginner guide to elemental reactions and your first team

Genshin Impact becomes much easier to understand once you stop treating every character as a separate damage dealer. Combat is built around applying one element, following with another and using the resulting reaction to control enemies or increase damage.

Learn reactions before chasing characters

The game uses seven elements: Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Cryo, Dendro, Anemo and Geo. Most reactions begin when one element is applied to a target and a second compatible element follows. A beginner does not need to memorize every formula. Start with one reliable interaction that your roster can trigger consistently.

Vaporize and Melt can increase the damage of the hit that triggers them. Frozen can hold many smaller enemies in place. Electro-Charged helps against groups, while Dendro combinations open several strong team styles. Anemo can spread compatible elements through Swirl, which makes it useful in crowded fights.

Build a team with four jobs

A comfortable first team usually needs an on-field damage dealer, an off-field elemental source, sustain and a flexible support. Sustain can come from healing or shielding. The support slot can add crowd control, buffs, energy or another element that completes your main reaction.

Choose roles before rarity. A four-star character who completes the team can be more useful than a rare character who competes for the same field time as your main attacker.

Use a simple combat order

Set up the element or buff that lasts after a character leaves the field. Add your support skill, activate healing or shielding when needed, then switch to the main damage dealer. Repeat the sequence when the important skills return.

If a fight feels weak, watch the elemental icons above the enemy. You may be triggering the wrong reaction, clearing an element too early or leaving an off-field skill unused.

Protect your early resources

Level one main team first. Raise the weapons and talents that directly support the skills you use. Avoid spreading character experience and upgrade materials across every new character. The early story gives enough room to experiment, but later upgrades become more expensive.

Save premium currency for banners you actually understand. Test featured characters when a trial is available and check whether they improve a role your account needs.

Build enough energy recharge for the rotation

An Elemental Burst that is never ready cannot support the team. Watch which character finishes the rotation without enough energy, then improve Energy Recharge, particle generation or the order in which characters collect particles.

Use Skills before Bursts when that order creates particles for the next cycle. Switch to the character who needs the energy before the particles arrive when possible. Smooth energy flow often improves a beginner team more than a small increase in visible damage stats.

Match reactions to the enemy

Frozen is useful against many movable enemies but does little when a boss cannot be held. Swirl can spread an element through a group, while a single durable target may reward a focused damage reaction. Read shields and elemental immunity instead of forcing one team into every encounter.

Keep one flexible slot when your roster allows it. Changing a support element can solve a puzzle, break a shield or make exploration more comfortable without rebuilding the main damage dealer.

Keep performance clear during combat

A practical first-session checklist

• Unlock nearby teleport points while completing story objectives.
• Read each character's skill description and identify what remains active after switching.
• Pick one elemental reaction your available roster can trigger reliably.
• Invest in four characters before building a second team.
• Upgrade useful weapons and talents alongside character levels.

The goal of your first team is consistency. Once you can apply elements in a deliberate order, survive comfortably and recharge key abilities, you have a foundation that can grow with your account.

Review the team after each world level increase. Check character levels, weapons, important talents and artifacts before replacing the reaction plan. A sudden difficulty jump often means the main team needs basic upgrades rather than a completely different roster.
